2010 AGM


The Association held its 109th Annual General Meeting at the Master Builders Centre in Westville on 8 June 2010.  The meeting elected Francois Louw of MET Builders as the Association’ new President for the 2010/11 term of office.  We wish Francois the best of luck and are confident that, with his leadership and guidance, the Association will continue to go from strength to strength and deliver on its mandate of providing relevant and professional support to members.

This occasion also saw the end of Gavin Strydom’s presidency of the Association.  Gavin has been the Associations President for an unprecedented four terms and his contribution has been immense.  Gavin’s patience, guidance, wisdom and inspiration were immeasurably valuable during a period which marked considerable change at the Association.  Not only was Gavin’s passion for the industry evident in all of his dealings, but he was an exemplary Chairperson who ensured that all discussions resulted in a truthful and inclusive outcome for the benefit of the Association, its members and the stakeholders whose lives it touches.  We thank him and look forward to working with him in various capacities over the coming years.

Minimum Wage

The meeting discussed the issue of introducing minimum wages for the Building Industry in KwaZulu Natal.  It was generally agreed that the minimum wage (excluding benefits) for a permanently or temporarily employed general worker is in the region of R90 in the greater Durban Area.  The Executive Director assured the members present that any implementation of the system would be sensitively handled to ensure that there were no sudden increases in wages which could not be sustained by the industry.  In addition it was recognised that there would need to be a distinction between urban and rural areas.

There were a number of outside agencies who were attempting to force the issue of a minimum wage in the Building Industry and it was agreed that it would be more appropriate for the Association to be proactive and implement a system appropriate for members rather than react to an inappropriate mechanism in the future.

It was pointed out that any further developments in this regard would be communicated with members and that the process would remain inclusive and take all views into account.
